Response from NARAS.

To give both sides equal time on my humble blog, here is the response from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (“The Grammy” folks) the the Grokster decision. My take: Both sides are full of sh*t. The EFF and other supporters are willing to ignore, or at least gloss over, the fact that the networks are primarily used as a means to illegally distribute copyrighted material by arguing that some legitimate uses exist for the network, and they are indeed used in those legitimate ways. The RIAA, NARAS and MPAA, on the other hand, are full of it…

UH takes heat over visit by Ward Churchill.

There has been some backlash over Churchill’s impending visit, including an attack by a prominent Republican state legislator. Some of those on our campus who have voiced objections to his visit have stated concern over use of taxpayer dollars for the visit, others have focused on the accusations that he falsified his ethnicity in order to gain his current position.

One Week To The Inaugural Hawaiian Grammy.

Both the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and the Honolulu Advertiser offer in-depth previews of the awarding of inaugural Hawaiian Grammy, and interviews with the nominees. The most interesting statistic is found at the bottom of the Star-Bulletin article: 17,000 Recording Academy members; Hawai’i-based voting members: about 90. One NARAS trustee estimated that about 10% of members vote in the Folk category; that’s about 1,700 voters. I wonder how many people will cast their vote for an artist they have never heard but only know by name. For this reason, I’m making no predicitons, however, if the voting was restricted to Hawai’i voters,…

Super Ferry Ahoy!

The first Hawai’i Superferry is scheduled to begin in early-2006. I can’t wait, though I’m sure Aloha and Hawaiian Airlines aren’t thrilled at the prospect of the competition. Perhaps it will revive their merger talks, which fell apart a few years ago.

For Eagle’s fans only: A variation on a joke my daughter told me.

Tom Brady dies after a long and successful career. He gets a personal tour of heaven from God, and is taken to his home – a humble, single bedroom home painted in Patriot colors. Tom looks across the street and sees a huge mansion, five stories tall with probably 20 bedrooms, and a couple of Rolls Royces in the garage. It’s painted green and white, with a huge flag bearing the Philadelphia Eagle’s logo fluttering in the wind. Brady turns to God and says, “Not that I’m complaining, but why do I have this dinky little home and Donovan McNabb…

Paul Brady on iTunes Music Store.

I was lamenting a few weeks ago that while ITMS does have a large catalog of Irish music, they had little of Paul Brady and Sean Keane. I just noticed that they got quite a number of Paul’s recordings up there, though there is still not much of Sean’s catalog in there.
