Hawai’i GOP lawmakers may move to block traffic cameras. I’m a bit tossed on this issue. I’m an ex-police officer, and know firsthand how difficult it is to nab violators who only obey traffic laws when they see a patrol car around. On the other hand, it really bothers me that this system is set up to assume guilt before innocence, and without identifying the perpetrator. If your car was speeding or ran a red light you are guilty, and the only way to get out of it is to identify the person who was driving the car (spouse, kid, lover, friend, boss, etc.), and have them admit to being the driver of the vehicle. The cameras only identify the car, not the driver. Not good.
