Faster Than A Speeding Bullet

Dave Winer is always up to something interesting, and even though I no longer use any UserLand products, I keep a close eye on everything he does. He’s creating a new podcast directory (sans all of the advertising that most of the other podcast directories have), and doing it in such a way that individuals can maintain nodes. I created an OPML file of Hawai‘i-originating and Hawai‘i-themed pocasts. I emailed the link to Dave at about 11:30HST, checked his directory, and it was already added. I’m not sure if the directory engine caches the OPML from my site or calls…

The truth is out…

Last year I pointed to Kenneth Makuak?ne’s weblog and speculated who his anonymous collaborator at UH-Hilo was. Well, Kenneth’s let the cat out of the bag, and I don’t mind – it’s me. It has been an amazing process, and hard to believe we’ve been at it for over a year. Sometimes I write lyrics to his music, sometimes he sets music to my mele, but there is always a lot of give and take. I always run the mele by my colleagues at UHH, a process called paka, to make sure that there isn’t anything in there that could…

From the mouths of babes…

I was testing out a brand new Sony DV video camera at my daughter’s piano recital today, and another parent came up to me and asked if we would be willing to make a copy of the tape for them. I told him that we were planning to copy the video to computer and make DVD copies for everyone if the recording came out OK. There was a young lad, perhaps six or seven years old in the seat directly behind me, and he asked if we had a Mac or PC. When I told him it was a Mac,…

MacHelpMaui Finds Its Stride

Scott at MacHelpMaui has a new podcast up with his new partner Carmen Gardner, and I must say the magic is back. I emailed Scott last week, suggesting that he was perhaps losing the focus on MacHelpMaui by harping on Microsoft and Windows’s problems, and providing less useful Mac information on his podcast and blog recently. Apparently he took the nudge to heart, and they combined to put out MHM’s best podcast in a while. Listening to Scott explain some of the Mac’s lesser known functionalities to Carmen and following along was great. I think it was much more effective…

Dave On The New Apple Ads

I’ve been reading Dave Winer since he wrote for Wired Magazine, followed Scripting News since its inception, and used many of the tools that he and his companies have shift. I’m slowly weaning myself the last of them, RadioUserland. Dave’s periodic rants about Apple are amusing, though occasionally off-base. The only thing I would consider a lock-in, and it’s only a bit of an inconvenience really, is the DRM in in iTunes. And that’s an RIAA/MPAA issue; I’m sure Apple wouldn’t complain if they didn’t have to add DRM to the content in iTMS. You can’t convert music downloaded from…

First Irish Podcast to Achieve Radio Syndication

Congratulations to Conn at An tImeall, who will become the first independent Irish podcast to cross-over to traditional radio. An tImeall begins a syndicated run on Galway city’s college community station, Flirt FM today. I was approached by a web radio operator who wanted to syndicate my Nahenahe.net podcast in his streams, but needed me to secure releases for the music and had stipulations that made it less than attractive for me do it. If someone was able to do it without requiring me to do any additional legwork (or fingerwork) and broadcast the podcasts as is, I would definitely…

Mac OS on non-Apple Intel Boxes? I don’t think so, Tim.

Or Todd. I usually leave commentary on the State of the Mac to my Celtic Cousin Scott, but need to chime in here. It doesn’t matter that the OS is what makes Macs sing, Apple is still a hardware company. Even iTunes Music Store is simply a vehicle to sell iPods, though I’m sure SJobs revels in hanging out with rock stars as well. Several blogs I read today have pointed to Cringley’s post on Boot Camp. Does anyone believe that Apple would push back the release of an OS for six months to placate a hardware vendor and cut…
