Dan asks some valid questions,

and Dave offers some solid answers. I really didn’t get into it when I abandoned Manila for our weblog projects, but the lack of UTF-8 support (and no indication that it would ever happen) was the main reason I had to do it, and the reason why someday I’ll probably abandon Radio as well. Dave’s reasons are prefectly valid. However, was releasing it under GPL really expected to remedy these shortcomings? Perhaps there was a real expectation that someone would pick up the mantle, carry on and modernize the kernel. Perhaps it will still happen. More and more of my…

Frapper is an interesting concept for building online communities.

Mahalo to Conn at An tImeall for inviting me to his Gaeilge Frappr site. I’m the little pin out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. If you’re a speaker or student of Gaeilge, I encourage you to sign up. Alternatively, if you are a Hawaiian music fan you can join my NahenaheNet Hawaiian music Frappr group. I still download and list to the An tImeall podcast regularly, but sadly my language studies have faltered due to an increasing work load and considering my Ph.d. prospects.

Firefox Rules!

My good deed for the day.

I spent some time with Scott on iChat trying to troubleshoot a problem with his copy of Radio Userland. All of his permalinks and picture links were broken, and the domain name of his site appeared twice in the URL, the second time it appeared as the root directory. I suspected it was a folder name problem and we found it. You need to be sure to use “http://” in the URL field in the FTP Option page (this link will only work if you have RU and it is running). Otherwise Radio interprets all of the URLs as relative,…

Why would I want my tunes interrupted by a phone call?

Apple Computer, in partnership with Motorola introduced the iTunes Phone, a music-playing phone. It comes loaded with iTunes software and can hold about 100 songs, and songs can be transferred from PC or Macintosh computers via a USB cable. Notice the print that is not only fine but grey as well – 2 year contract required. I’m not even remotely tempted.

Podcasting on High Tech Hawai’i.

Hawai’i podcasters Todd Cochrane of GeekNewsCentral.com, Peter Kay and Ryan K. Ozawa, will appear on David Lassner’s “High Tech Hawai’i” program. It should be a blast; I’ve appeared on HTH about four times already. Unfortunately we don’t have cable in our area and I’ll have to wait until the program is available online.
